IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Scope and Content:
The purpose of the “30 Years, 30 Voices” oral history project was to update a previous oral history project conducted by ACFPL in 1978. The casino era was just beginning in 1978, and the narrators chosen in that year described the Atlantic City of yesterday and expressed their hopes and thoughts about the casino era.

The narrators for the “30 Years, 30 Voices” 2008 project were chosen by the project team to reflect on the past 30 years of Atlantic City’s development and its casino era.

System of Arrangement:
Paper transcripts of the interviews are available in the Heston Room. They are arranged alphabetically by last the narrator’s last name. Three of the narrators were teenagers (those interviewed as the ACFPL Teen Advisory Group) at the time of their interviews and they are only identified by their first names.

Digital audio (.wav and .mp3 formats) and video (.mpeg) files of the interviews are also available for research, as are digital photographs (.jpg) of the narrators. Contact the archivist for more information.

ACFPL Living History Project
Atlantic City/Archival Collections

Date: 1977-1978
Collection Number: H040

Extent: 2.0 cubic feet (68 interviews)

Repository: Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library, 1 North Tennessee Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, (609) 345-2269.

Preferred Citation: <interview name>, Atlantic City Free Public Library Living History Project, Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library.

Creator:
The Atlantic City Free Public Library (ACFPL) conducted oral history interviews in 1978, at the advent of casino gambling in Atlantic City. The interviews were conducted with grant funding from the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), a program of the United States Department of Labor.

The 68 interviewees represented Atlantic City’s culturally and economically diverse citizens - small business owners, lifetime residents, city government officials, transients, school teachers, and local celebrities. The interviewees were chosen based on their experiences in Atlantic City, as well as their backgrounds and careers. Interviews focused on the history of the city, the interviewees’ relationship to the city, and their thoughts on the future of the city.

ACFPL employee Cynthia Ringe was the project supervisor and conducted most of the interviews, with project assistants Marie Cooney and Sandra Miller. Dian Spitler, ACFPL Reference Librarian, summed up the purpose of the Living History Project: "[The Oral History Project serves] to capture the color and the atmosphere and the flavor of the times...[T]he way it felt to be alive at a time when the city was the Queen of Resorts...[W]e are going to shift our focus and start capturing now – ...the people like me, like you, who are watching the city go through its other transformation into, we hope again, the Queen of Resorts, and the city will be known all over the world again, with good connotations."

IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Scope and Content:
Each interviewee was selected for his or her unique background and experiences. Interviews address topics such as:
  • earliest memories of Atlantic City
  • important events in Atlantic City (Miss America Pageant, fires, storms, World War II)
  • places and businesses in Atlantic City (Steel Pier, Traymore, Marlborough-Blenheim, Dennis, Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy, 500 Club, 1 Atlantic Ocean, White House Sub Shop, Gormley Funeral Home, Fischer Flowers, Atlantic City schools)
  • prominent people in Atlantic City (Nucky Johnson, Dean Martin, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hap Farley, other frequent celebrities and performers and local politicians)
  • predictions for the future of Atlantic City in the casino era.
Each interview was recorded on standard audiotapes and transcribed to paper by local transcriptionists. Interviews are approximately 60-90 minutes in length. Some notable interviews include:
  • Chris Columbo, renowned musician at the Club Harlem: "In my early days in Atlantic City it was just a whole lot of fun, because we had a city that you didn’t have to have a key to the front door. No one ever locked their doors."
  • Franklin W. Kemp, Atlantic City Fire Department Chief and author: "[T]oday, in 1978, there’s nothing remaining in [the St. Charles Place] area. It’s all been torn down by Urban Renewal." Frank Havens, photographer for the City of Atlantic City: "With the advent of gambling ...we’re going to have to find many more ways to entertain the people who come here when they are not gambling, or when they have their families with them..."
  • Joseph Hackney, local resident, born in 1898: "I don’t hesitate to say that the future of Atlantic City is so good that these people that talk about 'They can't do this' and 'They won't be able to do that' are talking through their hats...[W]ith what we have, the best city in the country, we won't have any trouble."

System of Arrangement:
The interviews are arranged alphabetically by the interviewee's last name. Seven anonymous interviews are at the end of the 61 other interviews. A complete list of the interviewees is included, with brief biographical information and interview content. Notes and subject terms were added by the ACFPL project staff in 1978.

Because the audio recordings are fragile, only the paper transcripts may be consulted in the Heston Room, unless special advance arrangements are made with Heston Room staff to listen to the audio recordings. Please contact Heston Room staff for more information.

Alfred M. Heston
Atlantic City/AC History

When Alfred Heston died in 1937 at the age of 83, he left behind a rich legacy of enduring achievements and service to Atlantic City. His commitment to civic service was evident in his roles as city

alfred heston.gif

official, newspaper editor and publisher, historian and author, founder of the Atlantic City Hospital and trustee of the Atlantic City Free Public Library. His innovative approaches to promoting the city contributed to the continuing development of Atlantic City as a resort.

As a public official he was well known for his independence and opposition to unethical practices in city government. First elected in 1895 as City Comptroller, he served in this position for many years. In 1912, City Council ousted him from the Comptroller's office after he refused to buy stock in a city contractor's street paving company and then rejected what he believed to be a spurious payment claim from the same company. In a statement to supporters he said:

Defeated? By no means. On the contrary, I have won a great victory. Plato says that conquest of self is the greatest of all victories. By subjecting my own interests to those of the public, I have won a greater victory than that of the man who has thrust me out of office. I have refused to do the bidding of those who seemed to care little for the public but who have had an eye on the main chance.

In his subsequent run for the post of City Commissioner in 1912, he was defeated, probably because he refused to align himself with any political factions. During the election he made it clear he "had no connection with any political machine and recognized no boss other than the general public." He was elected City Treasurer in 1914 with a vote that was, at the time, the largest ever cast for a candidate for any public office in the history of Atlantic City. A legal ambiguity concerning the direct election of a city treasurer led to the Board of Commissioners rejecting the vote but then appointing Heston to the position themselves. This in turn paved the way for his ouster from office a year later after he once again found himself at odds with corrupt political interests.

Heston had a notable newspaper career in the region, beginning with The West Jersey Press in Camden where he learned the printing trade right after completing high school in Philadelphia. Within a few years he became editor of the newspaper and subsequently went on to The Salem Standard and The Bridgeton Chronicle. In 1884 he purchased The Atlantic City Review; after relinquishing his interests in that paper, he later purchased The Atlantic Journal.

In the late 1880s, Heston began writing and publishing a long-running series promoting Atlantic City. Heston's Handbook: Atlantic City Illustrated was an annual publication devoted to publicizing the City's many attractions. Heston is also credited with devising the strategy for what was ultimately a highly successful public relations gambit: the city-run Press Bureau. Through promotional events, coverage of visiting celebrities and relationships with reporters throughout the country, the Press Bureau shaped the image of the city during its heyday as a resort destination.

The history of southern New Jersey was another area in which Heston made a significant contribution. He was the editor of South Jersey, A History, 1664-1924, a five-volume work covering historical events leading to the development of each county in the region as well as biographies of prominent residents. As an author, he wrote about the history of Atlantic City and the Egg Harbor region in Absegami: Annals of Eyren Haven and Atlantic City, 1609-1904. In Jersey Waggon Jaunts he turned historical fact into an eclectic set of anecdotal tales about New Jersey history, including many on Atlantic City.

Heston considered his founding of the Atlantic City Hospital his greatest achievement. The hospital opened in 1898, and Heston served as secretary of its board of governors for the next 25 years. As one of the founders and trustees of the Atlantic City Free Public Library, Heston was responsible for establishing the collection on local history. In the Library's earliest days, he made a significant number of contributions to the collection. Later, his personal library of books and manuscripts was acquired and formed the basis for expanded development of the Atlantic City history collection. Through both his publications and collection of historical materials, he continues to this day to support the work of researchers who, in varying ways, carry on his legacy.

Of his work, Panico said, "Working with the staff and students has been a constant source of satisfaction, and I have the privilege of being able to serve as the chairman [of the Science Department]. The department is well known throughout the state and has an excellent reputation. It is my hope that eventually we will have a new building with improved and enlarged science facilities, thereby allowing us to even further improve our science offerings to the community." He retired in the early 1990s.

The Atlantic City High School in which Panico taught his students was constructed in 1921 at Albany and Atlantic Avenues. It welcomed students from 1923 to 1994, and as originally constructed, included 15 science rooms. The building was demolished in 1999.

Archival Collections
Atlantic City/Archival Collections
The Heston Collection contains some archival collections of papers, photographs, scrapbooks, etc. that are preserved together for research. These collections are unique and many contain primary source documents which cannot be found elsewhere. Many of the collection names are listed below.

Finding aids, which describe what is within each collection and help locate information within each collection, are available for some of the collections. These are linked in the list below.

Because the archival collections are unique, they are in a closed-stack area and require staff assistance to access them. To view the collections listed below, either visit the Heston Room during research hours or make an appointment at least one business day in advance of your visit.

Atlantic City Directories
Atlantic City/Archival Collections

City, Telephone, and Cross-Reference Directories contain a wealth of information for those researching Atlantic City's past. City Directories include names of residents, home addresses, and professions, along with a classified listing of businesses. Advertisements for businesses are also found in the City Directories. Beginning around 1940, the City Directories include a street and address guide which lists each address and a person living there. Telephone Directories include the name(s) of the telephone account holder, as well as an address and telephone number. Classified listings in Telephone Directories ("yellow pages") include business advertisements. Cross Reference Directories list, by address, each building and a resident. They also include the resident's telephone number, and may include information on the value of the property and whether or not the resident is new to that address.

The Heston Collection has a large selection of Atlantic City City, Telephone, and Cross Reference Directories available for researchers to consult. Not every year is available. Please see the table below for additional information. Some of the directories are available only in print; some are available only in microfilm. Inquire at the Reference Desk to use the microfilm directories at the Library or to see directories that are only availble in print.

For information on remote research assistance with directories, please see the Heston Collection Research and Copy Fees page.

Atlantic City Free Public Library Collection of Atlantic City Photographs, 2007 Aerial Photographs
Atlantic City/Archival Collections

Date: October 15, 2007
Collection Number: H009.2007a

Extent: 161 digital photographs in both TIF and JPG formats; 161 8.5” by 11” color prints.

Repository: Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library, 1 North Tennessee Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, (609) 345-2269.

Preferred Citation: Atlantic City Free Public Library Collection of Atlantic City Photographs, 2007 Aerial Photographs (H009.2007a), Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library.

Creator:
In October 2007 the Atlantic City Free Public Library hired Artist In the Sky, an aerial photography company from Lake Village, Indiana, to make a visual record of Atlantic City. The Library determined to do this as many changes were occurring in Atlantic City at the time; the Sands Casino was demolished just days after the photo shoot and Revel Entertainment was clearing land in the Inlet area for a new casino.

IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Scope and Content:
The 161 individual digital images in this collection were captured on October 15, 2007 using a Canon EOS-5D camera. The images represent all areas of Atlantic City. Images were taken primarily from the water - the Bay, Inlet, or the Atlantic Ocean), but all neighborhoods of the City are visible.

Each image was transmitted to the Atlantic City Free Public Library as a TIF format and as a JPG file format in 4 compression levels (33%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Digital files were delivered to ACFPL on five DVD-R discs. TIF and JPG (100%) files were transferred to a server for digital preservation.

Digital files and prints were numbered according the digital file name assigned by the camera. Photograph descriptions were assigned by the archivist based on geological and manmade landmarks visible in each image.

System of Arrangement:
The 161 images were printed in July 2008 on 8.5” by 11” archival paper with archival ink by Arc Reprographics of Absecon, New Jersey. The printed images are housed in two boxes for researcher use. Box 1 contains images 9625 to 9709 and Box 2 contains images 9710 to 9785.

Digital images are stored in various formats by file name. Generally, researchers may not access the original digital images without special permission from the Heston Room archivist.

Harriet Francis Brisco (1903-2001) and Florence Merlyn Brisco (1905-2006) were sisters who grew up in Atlantic City, worked here in the school system, and retired to Arizona. They were the daughters of Joseph and Florence Brisco and lived at 408 North Indiana Avenue.

Francis graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1921 and worked as a teacher for more than 40 years, first at West Side School and later at Indiana Avenue School and Central Junior High School. She taught Social Studies at Central until retirement in about 1973.

Marven Hill, a former member of the Library Board of Trustees and a friend of the Briscos, donated the collection to the Atlantic City Free Public Library in 2003. Merlyn Brisco taught both Hill and his wife, Devolia, at Central Junior High School and Indiana Avenue School, respectively. Later, Hill was a colleague of both Briscos at Central Junior High School.

Calling All Creative Teens get involved with Mural/ Youth Services Floor-
blogs/jboyce
Shaina and I met with Stephen Gibson last week. He is very excited about doing the
graffiti mural in April. He will be in the end of March to do the light outline
of the mural in order to prep the wall for the teen involvement. He will conduct the
mural project/workshops on : April 13, 14, 15 (M,T,W) from 1-5 in the teen
space.

The next three dates are Saturdays: April 18 12-4, 25th 12-4 and May 2
12-4. This should be the last date and the mural will be completed.

As far as the YS Floor. Charles and I met this week and came up with a
plan we think should work pretty well. I would like to meet early the
first week of March to hopefully do the reorganization during the week of
March 9-13. This would allow for Charles to prime the wall for Stephen
during hopefully the end of the third week of March (19th 20th?) Stephen
will be in Saturday the 28th of March to sketch out the mural.

Dr. James R. Karmel Atlantic City Project Oral History Interviews
Atlantic City/Archival Collections

Date: 2002-2006
Collection Number: H005

Extent: 1.0 cubic feet (46 interviews)

Repository: Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library, 1 North Tennessee Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, (609) 345-2269.

Preferred Citation: <interview name>, Dr. James Karmel Atlantic City Project Oral History Interviews, Alfred M. Heston Collection, Atlantic City Free Public Library.

Creator:
Dr. James Karmel is a professional historian and author of Gambling on the American Dream: Atlantic City and the Casino Era, which is based on the oral history interviews he conducted from 2002-06 for this project. He is an associate professor of history at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. Dr. Karmel has written or presented four other papers on Atlantic City and the casino era.

This project was conducted with funding from the New Jersey Historical Commission and Harford Community College.

IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Scope and Content:
The narrators for this project were chosen by Dr. Karmel. His goal was to document the impact of casinos on the lives of residents in the Atlantic City region. Narrators include government officials (both local and state), immigrants, casino employees, local business owners, and longtime residents of the area. Notably, this is the first project of its kind to document the immigrant experience in Atlantic City.

Karmel developed a list of questions for each interview and asked narrators questions about their childhood, education, work experience, and the role and impact of casinos in Atlantic City. He interviewed narrators at union halls, the Spanish Community Center, Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, the Asian Food Market, and other locations.

Audio recordings of some of the interviews are available as digital files in MP2 format.

System of Arrangement:
The interviews are arranged alphabetically by the narrator’s last name. A complete list of the interviewees is included below, with brief biographical information and interview content. Some interviews have full transcripts, while others are more like notes taken during the interviews. Audio recordings are available for some of the interviews; these are noted in the list below also. Audio files do not exist for every interview.  Transcript and audio are missing for 1 of the interviews.

There are seven interviews by narrators that are restricted. These will be closed to research for 75 years for privacy reasons and are not included in the list below.

Dr. Randall Pinkett at the Library
Programs and Events/Podcasts

drpinkett.jpgFans of the NBC's "The Apprentice" came out on Monday, May 15, to attend a special Atlantic City Free Public Library program featuring season four winner Dr. Randal Pinkett. Listen to the entire 52 minute program!

An enthusiastic crowd of 100 people greeted him with a standing ovation when he took the stage. Dr. Pinkett discussed his background, experience on the television show and work for Donald Trump, and he answered questions from the audience. Dr. Pinkett also posed for pictures and signed autographs for everybody who wanted them.

Dr. Pinkett said his family stressed education and that it was his way to make a name for himself. Even though he was a track standout at Rutgers University, where he finished with a 3.9 grade point average and was the first African-American selected Rhodes Scholar in school history, education was always his first priority. Dr. Pinkett holds five degrees, including a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"People say I have more degrees than a thermometer," he joked. "Some say I got a little carried away."

He was selected as one of 18 candidates chosen from among one million applicants to compete for the opportunity to run one of Donald Trump's companies. Dr. Pinkett oversees both renovation and information technology projects for Trump Entertainment Resorts in Atlantic City. His apprenticeship with the Trump organization is due to end in December.

Dr. Pinkett is also President and CEO of BCT Partners, a multimillion dollar, management, technology and policy consulting services firm based in Newark that works with corporations, gove ment agencies and nonprofit organizations. BCT Partners is a minority-owned and operated company and one of the leading firms in the country with expertise in the following industries: housing and community development, economic development, healthcare, human services, nonprofit and community technology and education.

Reed, known as Dr. Tom to his friends, was active in the Atlantic City community. He served as City Clerk in 1867, was involved in an early venture to dig wells and install waterworks, was one of the directors of the Atlantic City National Bank, was on the board of directors in charge of the 1904 celebration to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Atlantic City, and served in several appointed roles for the Atlantic City Gas & Water company. For many years he resided at 22 North Pennsylvania Avenue, and he conducted his medical practice from his residence.

Reed painted these drawings of flowers in the Atlantic City area from 1907-1910. He died about 1910.

Do Research/Reference News
images_people_langfordsmallRepublican Chris Christie defeated incumbent John Corzine to become the first  elected republican to hold the governor’s office since the resignation of Christie Todd Whitman  on January 31, 2001.  Christie’s election is noteworthy because the majority of  registered voters in New Jersey are Democrats.
In our local area, Lorenzo T. Langford, with 59% of the vote, was elected to a full four year term as Mayor of Atlantic City.  Frank Gilliam and Moisse Delgado were elected to fill City Council seats vacated by John Schultz and Eugene Robinson.
The Public Question, to authorize the sale of $400 million to fund the Green Acres Program, passed by a margin of 52% to 48%.

Email Notification
My Account/Email Notification

email_notification.gif

Would you like a quick, easy way to find out when your books on hold are ready to pick up? How about a reminder that your items are due? You can get all that through email Notices.

How do I sign up?

To sign up for email notices, you will need to log in to "My Account" .

Once you have logged in, click on the button that says "Modify Personal Info".   On this page, you will see a form with a text field for your email address. Please be sure to type in the complete email address (for example " This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ") and be sure that it is correct. Once you have completed the form, click the "Submit" button.

If you ever need to change or delete your email address from our system, you simply need to use the My Account section to change or delete the information.

What are Email Notices?

Email notices are an optional way for you to be notified that items you have requested to be held for you have arrived at the pickup location. We also use email to send overdue and billing notices. Additionally, the library is able to send "reminder" notices. These reminders are sent three days before your item is due, the day the item is due, and five days after the due date.

There are a few advantages to you and the Library when using this service:

  • Notices get to you faster. It takes one or two more days for a paper mailer to reach your mailbox than it does an email message to reach your email account.
  • The reminder notices. Due to the cost of sending out paper mailers, we are unable to send out the "3 days before due", "day due" and "5 days overdue" paper reminder notices. The email reminders will allow you the chance to renew your materials or to return them, so you can avoid fines.
  • Reduction of costs to the Library. Each email notice sent reduces the cost for us to send out the daily mail notices. In turn, this will allow us to use your tax dollars more efficiently.
  • Environmentally friendly. Each email notice sent reduces the number of paper mailers we must use. This can eventually reduce the number of trees used to produce paper mailers. Save a tree -- register for email notification!
  • Parental oversight. Many parents set up their children's accounts so that the children's notices are sent to the parents' email address.

Please be aware that this service replaces paper mailers. At this time we are not able to send both paper and email notices. Also, if you are unable to check your email regularly, this service may not be right for you.

Will I receive other mailings from the Library or from other Agencies if I use this service?

All patron information to be private and confidential. We do not release or sell any patron information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses.

If you sign up for email notices, we will use your email address only for Atlantic City Free Public Library business.

How do I cancel email services?

You can remove your email address from our system and return to paper notices very easily. All you need to do is log in to the My Account section of our web site and go to the "Modify Personal Info" section. Simply delete your email address and "Submit" the change. The Library will begin to send paper notices to your mailing address.

What if my email address becomes unreachable?

Our system is designed to watch for "bounced" or "returned" email messages. When an email message is returned to us, we determine if the message is a "critical" message (i.e. a hold notice or overdue notice). In these cases, we generate a backup paper mailer and send it to you.

If there are too many email messages returned from your account, our system will automatically switch your account settings so that you will receive only paper notices.

Gaming Day at Atlantic City Free Public Library 11.14.2009
blogs/jboyce

Say Anything by North Star Games LLC is a clever twist on the standard party question game. In the game, players take turns asking questions that can be fairly open to interpretation. If you are playing with students, scan the cards for the few that are definite no-no’s and remove them before play. After the question is asked, each of the other players writes their answers down on a dry erase board and place them out for everyone to see.

Boring, right? Hold it now…. hit it! The person who asked the question now selects their favorite answer from those written by the other players. Once the secret selecting has been done, then each of the players place two tokens on the answers they think that the questioner may have chosen. This may be their own answer or another player’s. They can split their chips or place them both on one answer. Say Anything has players crafting answers based on the person asking the questions and reflecting again once all of the answers are played out. It is a wonderful way for students to put themselves in the perspective of their peers. They often will be pleasantly surprised at what they learn about the people they are around each and every day
