Angela Burton & Passion to perform music of Club Harlem in February

Angela Burton newThe Atlantic City Free Public Library is celebrating diversity through its new Multicultural Music Series. The series, with support from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, will include music and dance performances highlighting holidays and cultures from around the world.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Magdaliz and Her Latin Ensemble CRISOL on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. — Crisol, which is Spanish for melting pot, is an ensemble that has been performing in Philadelphia and surrounding areas since 1997. This group is dedicated to the interpretation of a variety of folk and traditional music genres from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, and other parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. Italian-American Heritage Month: John Collins on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. — Collins is an accordion player with more than 50 years of experience. He will perform Italian songs while incorporating a variety of instrument sounds, such as the piano, violin and guitar. (View clip from this performance)
Hispanic Heritage Month: Cuerdas de Borinquen on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m. — Cuerdas de Borinquen is a four-piece group that showcases the tropical sounds of Puerto Rico in its performances. The band performs regularly at Olon Restaurant at Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City. (View clip from this performance)
Diwali: Polash Gomes and Abhik Mukherjee on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. – Polash Gomes founded the Rageshree Music Institute in 1991, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Indian classical music and presenting this art form through concerts and educational programs. Abhik Mukherjee is a sitar player and vocalist who has performed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Metropolitan Museum of Art and internationally.
Hanukkah: Kosher Jazz on Trio on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. – Kosher Jazz dishes out authentic yet unique versions of Yiddish Swing tunes (such as Bei Mir Bist du Schein) Klezmer and Israeli Horas (Der Heyser Bulgar, Heveinu Shalom Aleichem), Hanukkah hits, jazz, bossa nova, and even a little rock and roll! Kwanzaa: Afro-One Dance, Drama and Drum Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. – Afro-One Dance, Drama and Drum Theatre will perform songs and traditional and contemporary dance, while also teaching about Kwanzaa’s history and principles.
Christmas: Brenda Bass Brass Quartet on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 12 p.m. – The Brenda Bass Brass Quartet will play Christmas favorites, such as “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “O Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bells.” (View clip from this performance).
Black History Month: Angela Burton & Passion on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. – Angela Burton & Passion (pictured above) will pay tribute to Atlantic City’s former Club Harlem, where Burton regularly sang. Burton will perform songs that were heard at the club and discuss her time playing at the legendary venue.
