Summer Reading Program to begin with party June 26

Steel PierThe Atlantic City Public Library will hold a Summer Reading Program kickoff party Tuesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. The Summer Reading Program, for children and teenagers ages 0-18, will include a magic show and fun activities. Those who sign up for the program at the party will receive a free book to start their summer of reading.
Steel Pier in Atlantic City is once again a sponsor of the Summer Reading Program. Please call the Youth Services Department at (609) 345-2269, ext. 3050, for more information.

WEEKLY CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Musical Storytime and Craft
Thursdays, June 28; July 5, 26; Aug. 2, 9 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Features stories, songs, dance, finger plays and simple crafts. Family and siblings are welcome. Library story times are a fun way to help your child develop skills they will need to be ready to read. Ages 3-6.

Baby Bounce and Play Group
Thursdays, June 28; July 5, 26; Aug 2, 9 from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Introduce infants to the world of sounds, rhythm and stories. Stories, songs, rhymes and movement help build pre-reading skills. An informal play group immediately follows. Ages 2 and younger.

Comic Drawing
Thursdays, June 28; July 5, 12, 19, 26; Aug 2, 9 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Marvel/DC Comic Illustrator Joe Del Beato will lead drawing instruction for children and teens. Learn how to draw your favorite characters. All materials supplied. No experience necessary. Ages 8-17

Chess Club
Fridays, July 6, 13, 27; Aug 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 from 1-2 p.m.
The library's chess club is for all experience levels. Ages 9-12

Unplugged Game Day

LEGO Club

PAWS to Read with Sophie the Poodle
Wednesdays. Please call for dates and times
Children reading to dogs is a program for children ages 4-10 who can sign up to read to Sophie the Poodle, a certified therapy dog, in a relaxed and fun environment. Participating children should not be fearful of dogs or have pet allergies.

Sounds of Brazil
Wednesday, July 11 from 1-2 p.m.
Workshop by Minas featuring the music and culture of Brazil, with a live performance and hands-on participation. Participants will sing and play Brazilian percussion instruments. Reservations required. Ages 9 and older.

Sciencetellers
Thursday, July 12 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Sciencetellers will make things fly, spin, move and soar while telling a series of stories! Kids will experience the science of power and energy through hands-on experiments! Ages 5-12.

Choo Choo Charlie
Tuesday, July 17 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Choo Choo Charlie will take you on a magical adventure with train effects, magic and comedy. Ages 5-9.

Summer STEM Workshops
Wednesdays, July 18, Aug. 1, 15 from 2-3:30 p.m.
Hands-on science fun for kids. Registration required. Space limited. Ages 9-17. In collaboration with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County.

Jersey Rocks!
Thursday, July 19 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Noted storyteller Michelle W. Wilson brings the folklore of the Pine Barrens and the Jersey shore to life with her tales. Ages 6-9.

Strange World of Reptiles
Thursday, July 19 from 1-2 p.m.
This interactive presentation features live reptiles and amphibians! All ages.

From On the Boardwalk to Under the Boardwalk: Atlantic City
Friday, July 20 from 1-3 p.m.
Atlantic City music has fun and rich history, inspiring songwriters and artists from Paul McCartney to Diana Ross to Bruce Springsteen. Come listen to songs from all genres that talk about Atlantic City. Presented by Heather Perez of the Stockton University Richard E. Bjork Library Special Collection. All ages.

Flight School: Paper Planes That Soar
Saturday, July 21 from 3-4 p.m.
Are you a first-time flyer? Are you looking for simple paper airplane models to impress your friends? From the Dynamic Dart to the Tailspin, the models are easy to fold and a blast to fly. Ages 9-17.

Our Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles
Tuesday, July 24 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Discover which types of marine mammals and sea turtles come to New Jersey and the dangers they face while here. Learn about the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and how it helps our marine mammal friends. All ages.

Magical Chad

Magic show followed by magic lessons. Reservations required for magic lessons. All ages.

Seussology
Tuesday, July 31 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
A fun and interactive program run by a very funny and silly cat. Ages 3-8.

End-of-Summer Reading Program
Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m.
Celebrate your reading accomplishments with a free afternoon at the Steel Pier. Open to any child or teen who registered for the Summer Reading Program and read at least three books or attended three programs June 26-Aug. 13. Participants must register at the Youth Services Department to attend. Children age 9 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

TEEN PROGRAMS

Teen Summer Kickoff After-party

Tuesday, June 26 from 4:30-6 p.m.
Ages 13-18 are invited to stay after the official summer kickoff for an after party.

Crochet Circle
Wednesday, July 11, 25; Aug. 8 from 2-3 p.m.
Learn the basics of crochet; chain, single crochet and double crochet. Crochet hooks and yarn will be provided or bring your own! Registration required. In collaboration with the Oceanside Family Success Center.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
Saturdays, July 14, 28 and Aug. 11, 25 from 1-2 p.m.
TAG is our volunteering group for ages 13-18. Ask about how to apply at the Youth Services desk.

Self Defense for Teens
Saturday, July 14 from 2-3 p.m.
Learn how to defend yourself! A certified instructor will teach the best self-defense and safety techniques. In collaboration with Oceanside Family Success Center.

Crafty Teens

Silent Library Challenge
