The Atlantic City Free Public Library Film Society celebrated its fifth anniversary this month with the help of a special guest.
Entertainment publicist Gary Springer (wearing green shirt in photo) paid a visit to the Main Library to speak to the Film Society on July 9. Springer heads New York City-based Springer Associates PR, a company founded by his late father, legendary Hollywood publicist John Springer.
Springer discussed his personal life, including childhood encounters with Hollywood icons – such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor – who his father represented, his acting career and work as a publicist. His resume includes representing/advising clients and working on an extensive list of projects in theatre, film and television.
“It was an honor to have Gary speak to our group,” Film Society coordinator Theresa Hawkins said. “We have been friends for many years, so he felt free to provide us with unforgettable tales about his relationships with some of the greatest stars of all time. Some of the Film Society members said it was the best library presentation they had ever attended.”
The Film Society meets twice every month. The first meeting of the month is to watch a movie and discuss it. The second meeting is a classroom session which focuses on a particular aspect of cinema, such as screenwriting or in-depth looks at different actors and directors.
Adult Atlantic City Free Public Library members (18 years of age and older) in good standing are invited to join the Film Society. Library card and Film Society applications are available online and the Main Library Circulation Desk.
The Film Society has scheduled its August meetings:
• View “All The President’s Men” on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m. – This 1976 political thriller is rated R and runs 138 minutes.
• Discuss National Film Registry on Monday, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m. – This classroom session will focus on the work of the organization behind this historic list and the films that are on it.
